MADRAS BOAT CLUB
Founded in 1867, the Madras Boat Club stands as one of India’s oldest and most prestigious rowing institutions.
Situated on the scenic banks of Chennai’s Adyar River, we have been nurturing the sport of amateur rowing – and building lifelong friendships – for over 155 years. Our membership is a healthy mix of rowing and social members, who combine to make MBC one of the finest sporting clubs in this part of the world
A vibrant mix of rowing and social members, we combine athletic passion with camaraderie, making MBC a cultural and sporting landmark in South India. Whether you row competitively or simply enjoy our facilities, MBC is a place to connect, rejuvenate, and grow.
From modest beginnings on Ennore Creek and the Cooum River, MBC settled on the Adyar in the late 19th century. The iconic red-tiled vintage colonial styled club has since then pioneered formal regattas, including the historic Madras-Colombo race in 1898, one of the world’s oldest inter-club rowing events. Our original dark-blue-and-gold monogram remains an enduring symbol of our heritage.
Today, the club has over 500 rowing members and more than 1000 non-rowing members in different categories.
